Fact or Crap

Phantom Facts

Our trivia contest is a combination of True or False statements from the game Fact or Crap and one or two serious trivia questions that we hope you'll find challenging and interesting. All correct answers will earn one point toward RRHS64 bragging rights and perhaps some yet-to-be-determined prize at our next class event.  New questions will be posted on Mondays and Thursdays, so check back often. Answers for Monday's questions must be submitted by midnight Eastern time on Wednesday and answers for Thursday's questions are due by midnight on Sunday.

Answers for 06-25-20:

1.  The Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in the United States effective January 1, 1863.
Crap  It only freed the slaves in states that had seceded from the United States. Slaves in the rest of the country were freed by the 13th Amendment passed on 01-31-1865 and ratified on 12-31-1865. Half of you knew this, half not so much.
2.   Cyclones spin in a clockwise direction in the southern hemisphere.
Fact. Everyone got this one. Lots of Coriolis Effect fans in this group, I guess.
3.   An octopus has three hearts.
Fact. Everyone got this one too. Better toughen these up a bit.
4.   Name the woman who originally recorded the message "the number you have dialed is no longer in service"
Joyce Gordon. She was also the first woman to wear glasses on TV. Everyone guessed Jane Barbe, a very famous voice actress who recorded the time of day, among other things, but not the original out of service message.
5.   Which country, in 1893, was the first to give women the vote?
New Zealand  Everyone apparently knew that.
